Why it exists
Irreversible change creates a different kind of leadership challenge.
I came to understand this when profound loss changed life in ways that could not be undone. Searching for a practical way forward, I immersed myself in the thinking on resilience, recovery and change.
“How do you lead when there is no old normal to return to?”
That question became the foundation of The Regenerate Leap™.
Drawing on three decades of work across systems, investment and resilience, I developed a framework for moving through profound disruption: face what is true, build the capacity the new reality demands, and create what comes next.
Because when change becomes irreversible, leadership requires more than endurance.
It requires the courage and capacity to build forward.
The Leadership Distinction That Matters Now
When bouncing back is no longer an option.
Resilience helps you endure disruption. Regeneration helps you build forward through it. The difference decides whether your organisation evolves or quietly becomes obsolete.
"The day before something is truly a breakthrough, it's a crazy idea."
Peter H. Diamandis. The principle that applies equally to leadership strategy.
| Criterion | Resilience: restoring the past | Regeneration: building the future |
|---|---|---|
| Core orientation | Restore the past. Return to the prior baseline. | Build the future. Design a model fit for current conditions. |
| Relationship to change | Absorbs the shock and minimises damage. | Learns through disruption and accepts irreversible change. |
| Underlying assumption | A stable "normal" exists to bounce back to. | There is no baseline to return to. The ground has permanently shifted. |
| What it protects | Preserves what already exists. | Builds new cognitive, emotional, and organisational capability. |
| Direction of travel | Backward-looking. Endure until things settle. | Forward-looking. Leap before the old model fails. |
| End state | Intact, but fundamentally unchanged. | Redesigned for the conditions that exist now. |

Two readers, one method
Bereavement, illness, divorce, or upheaval no one wrote a manual for, and a family or people depending on you to keep going.
A founder, CEO, or board facing structural disruption, a market that shifted, a model that broke, a team that needs a way forward.
The Crisis
Personal upheaval. Family strain. A market that turned. A model that stopped working. Often not one crisis but several at once, a polycrisis, with no stable ground to retreat to.
"Stay resilient. Absorb the shock. Wait it out. Get back to normal."
But what if there is no "normal" to return to? What if resilience, the very quality we are taught to prize, is keeping us anchored to a reality that no longer exists?
The Serotinous Pine Cone
The serotinous pine cone holds its seeds sealed in resin for years, waiting. Not for rain. Not for perfect conditions. For fire. The very thing that destroys the old forest is the only force powerful enough to release the seeds of the new one.
Don't bounce back to what broke. Build forward into what's next.
The REGENERATE Framework
Built from how living systems respond to shock and tested in organisational crisis.
RAZE
A controlled burn removes fuel, not shelter. Face what is true, stop what no longer serves, and find footing in what cannot be changed.
Recognise. Embrace. Ground.
ENRICH
After fire, ash becomes nutrient. Build the decision-making capacity the next phase will draw on.
Empower. Navigate. Equip. Reframe.
GROW
The forest regrows differently, shaped for the conditions that exist now. Execute and embed the new capacity while the margin for error is thin.
Adapt. Transform. Evolve.

"I was with Stuart when his world collapsed, and I have seen him apply these principles in the most challenging contexts. Having coordinated the international response to one of the most devastating natural disasters in modern history, I know the difference between recovery and regeneration is leadership. The clearest, most actionable framework I have encountered for leading through catastrophic disruption, required reading for anyone in public service, diplomacy, or humanitarian response."
Asif Ahmad, CMG
British Ambassador to the Philippines, 2013 to 2017

"This is not a resilience book. It is a rigorous framework for leaders facing irreversible change, when the old playbook no longer applies and there is nothing to 'bounce back' to. Serious, practical, and quietly confronting. I would recommend it to CEOs, founders, and board leaders navigating structural disruption."

Its lessons speak equally to C-suite leaders navigating disruption and to families finding their way through upheaval. Grounded, and at times a book you must set down to absorb."

About the Author

Stuart read over 500 books looking for a manual for leading his family when there was no roadmap. He did not find one. So he wrote this one.
The Regenerate Leap is built on marine systems science, three decades of field experience across ocean investment and community resilience, and one family's experience of irreversible loss.
It is not a memoir. It is a method.
The fire is inevitable.
Who you become is not.
